Welcome from Associate Vice President and Dean of Students Shawn Newton

Aug 29, 2022

A fall 2022 welcome message from Associate Vice President and Dean of Students Shawn Newton:

Dear Vikings:

Welcome and welcome back! I am pleased to welcome you to the new academic year, as the Dean of Students and a proud Viking alum.

While we eagerly look forward to your arrival on campus, the safety and continued academic success of our campus and community is our priority. All Salem State students are required to be fully immunized, including a booster shot, against COVID-19 before returning to campus for the fall semester. This includes undergraduate and graduate students who are attending in-person classes, conducting research on campus, living in residence halls, or participating in campus life activities.

We appreciate your efforts to keep yourself, your fellow Vikings, and our community safe. The university actively monitors health and safety conditions and will communicate if additional measures are required to maintain the health and safety of the community. Visit salemstate.edu/covidvaccine for more information.

Join me in helping all students become actively involved in our campus and the local community. We offer intentionally designed, high-impact efforts that enhance learning to enable students to gain the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to become engaged citizens and to graduate. From the day of service for first year students, to Convocation, to Welcome Week, there is much excitement awaiting you.

Organized around three clusters, student life actively engages students through a shared vision fostering your success. These three clusters include wellness, student engagement, and student experience and transition, which house specific departments who work collaboratively. Through implementing best practices and building upon meaningful partnerships, we offer a safety net of support services and a springboard for leadership and student development.

Take advantage of the resources and many opportunities we offer to enhance your education. Explore, engage, and challenge yourself to succeed. Visit with me during my regular office hours, which you may do by contacting Ruthann Reed at rreed@salemstate.edu Although change is all around us, we take great pride in continuing to provide the highest quality programs and services to students. I look forward to a rewarding academic year together.

Go Vikings!
