Faculty, staff, and librarians, who identified as first-gen college students, are invited to join us in welcoming our first-generation students (neither parent has received a bachelor's degree) to campus this fall as part of our NEW online First-Gen Yearbook.
Having been through the experience, you know how important it is to see others in leadership, teaching, and mentoring roles who also held that identity. The strategies, skills, and mindsets that you learned as a first-gen college student are ones that our current students can benefit from as well.
To participate, please email firstgen@salemstate.edu with the following which will be included:
Name
Position/Department
Undergraduate institution
Email address
Optional: preferred pronouns, masters/doctoral institution, were you part of a student organization or did you do an internship as an undergrad - what group/company?
- Looking back, what advice would you give yourself as a new student entering college.
- What was one of the most important things you did as a student in college to achieve success?
- How did you deal with the fear of failure or imposter syndrome as a first-gen student?
- What three questions do you wish you had asked while navigating college as a first-gen student?
- Who mentored you through your experience OR who inspired you to keep going?
Please also include a photo that we can use in the yearbook - this can be a formal headshot OR a fun photo that shows your personality. Whatever you prefer...
Thank you for participating in this new initiative!
