Monday, September 30

Campus Training with Counseling & Health Services I 11 am–1 pm

Counseling and Health Services (CHS) is a partner of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's Community Naloxone Program. As part of this program, we are able to distribute free opioid overdose prevention medication, naloxone (Narcan) to students, staff, and faculty. 

Arn Chorn-Pond: A Life of Music, Healing, and Hope I 7:30-8:30 pm

Join us for an evening with Arn Chorn-Pond, musician, human rights activist, and peace advocate. Arn will share his story as a child during the Khmer Rouge regime and how music saved his life and the role of the arts in transforming society on a wider scale.

Hip Hop Workshop with Luis Davila I 1:40-2:55 pm

Luis Davila was born and raised in Salem MA. He started his dance journey at the age of 5 years old as a freestyler. He trained in many styles such as Breaking, Hip Hop, Krump, and House dancing.  At the age of 18 he joined a dance company known as Phunk Phenomenon and throughout the years he has been a part of other dance studios from Boston and NYC. He has competed and performed at various events and competitions such as Puma, Clarks, Telemundo, Hasbro, Hip Hop International, World of dance, CoNNect, Prelude and many more. He is currently a dance teacher in the Salem public schools and neighboring dance studios in Salem.  

All are welcome!

Vice-Presidential Debate Watch Party I 8-10:30 pm

Come join your classmates to watch the Vice-Presidential debate. This is a great opportunity to learn about the candidates, how they stand on the issues and to meet other civic minded members of the community.

8 pm doors open, 9 pm debate begins.

Refreshments will be served.

Multilingualism and Intersectionality

Hispanic/Latinx culture is diverse and multilingual. Our students hold identities and language variations that intersect.

This Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month panel discussion, hosted by Perla Barbosa PhD from the McKeown School of Education and Michele Davila Gonçalves PhD from World Languages and Cultures, aims to name the intersections, acknowledge biases, and advocate for a better understanding of what a Latinx/e is on campus and in their communities.

Crossing Digital Fronteras: Rehumanizing Latinx Education and Digital Humanities I 4:30-6 pm

Join Salem State's English department, Interdisciplinary Studies and Inclusive Excellence for a talk with Latinx youth immigration scholar Dr. Isabel Martínez, Associate Professor and Director of Latinx, Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Northeastern University.
