Careers in Communications
Our media and communication curriculum is dynamic and diverse, making it a versatile and valuable path forward for students who enjoy telling stories and connecting with others. Media and communication are essential components in many industries, creating wide ranging opportunities for graduates. Our alumni have translated their earned skills and media literacy to countless avenues and careers, and their success builds on our work surrounding the production and distribution of messages.
As an MCO major, you will acquire industry knowledge and professional essentials and be assisted with opportunities to expand your learning outside of the classroom. This major is holistic in its design, seeking to build strong contributors not just to the working world, but to our society. Through improved communication, and deep understanding of how media works and is effectively created, our students grow into the storytellers and leaders of tomorrow.
Our program provides cutting-edge knowledge and practical experience required for a successful and lucrative career in a number of media-related professions. Three of those industries are represented in our offered concentrations:
Advertising
Advertising in 2024 is dynamic and detailed, with ranging iterations across mediums. In a world built on content circulation, our advertisers must learn to craft messages in compelling ways for audiences around the world. From print ads to television spots and social media sponsored posts, students learn about the professional process of planning and executing marketing strategy for commercial businesses and other organizations. With emphasis on brand building and cultivation, this track highlights strategy and persuasive appeal.
Journalism
Whether in traditional print, radio, television, or on the latest digital formats, a good journalist keeps the public informed about news and events. Looking at journalistic ideals and the realities of our media today, students are trained to ask questions and share answers in ways that empower others with knowledge and insight.
Public Relations
In today's world, businesses and organizations need to cultivate relationships and maintain good communication with their customers, the media, and the public at large. Public Relations professionals pave the way for this through strategic messaging and ongoing dialogue designed to inform and connect these different groups. Students in our PR concentration continuously practice these design and delivery tactics, infusing their areas of interest with practical and demonstrable projects worthy of a great PR portfolio.
Please note that students who do not wish to specialize in one of these three concentration areas, or who have different goals outside of these industries, also have the flexibility to major in media and communication without declaring a concentration.
