Sport and Movement Science

If you see yourself as a physical education teacher, the dual degree 4+1 program is the way to get there. Major in sports and movement science and minor in education to reach your teaching goals.

Sport and movement science offers students a strong academic program with state-of-the-art labs and other facilities. Clinical and non-clinical concentrations allow students to pursue the educational and career paths that fit their needs.

The exercise science concentration is designed to provide the student with the competencies necessary to become a skilled and competitive professional in the marketplace. The pre-rehabilitation science track will help prepare you to pursue an advanced degree in the allied health sciences such as athletic training, occupational therapy, physical therapy, chiropractic, speech pathology and others. Additional pre-requisites will need to be taken based on your specific allied health interest.

The exercise science concentration is designed to provide the student with the competencies necessary to become a skilled and competitive professional in the marketplace. The professional track will prepare you to work with clients on the front lines of exercise, strength and conditioning, cardiac rehabilitation and/or health and wellness.

The recreation management concentration curriculum is designed to provide students with the theoretical background and the applied experiences necessary to be managers/leaders in the recreation field upon graduation or to continue studies in a graduate degree program. The Sport Management concentration is designed to prepare students in the rapidly growing and dynamic field of sport management. The program of study emphasizes providing a well-rounded education utilizing global best practice delivered locally with a variety of theoretical and practical opportunities available to students. The curriculum provides the student with the knowledge necessary for today’s sport manager, reflecting the needs of the profession and the competencies required by the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA) and the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). Learn more about management in Sport and Movement Science.

The Professional Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) Program is designed to prepare students for Board of Certification (BOC) for a career as a licensed Athletic Trainer in a variety of different clinical settings.

Salem State University’s MSAT Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). The sequencing of athletic training courses takes two years to complete. In addition to the required didactic and laboratory experiences, this program requires the completion of 1,040 hours of direct patient care clinical experiences under the direct supervision of a licensed athletic trainer.

The MSAT Program offers an integrative approach to classroom and laboratory course work that is combined with extensive hands-on clinical experiences. The program faculty utilize contemporary research, clinical expertise, and technology to provide students with an integrative perspective and understanding of comprehensive sports medicine care. This program has limited enrollment and specific requirements for admission and retention.

Wellness is the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. At its essence, wellness is a multi-dimensional but individual pursuit that is the baseline for developing stronger, healthier, happier communities.  

Community wellness is based around a public health approach with three assumptions: (1) the principal that individual health and wellness is vital to that of the community; (2) many illnesses are preventable through the management of diet, exercise, and lifestyle; and (3) the community contains many solutions to public health issues. 

Unique and versatile, the graduate certificate in sport development and management is designed to prepare graduates to move into leadership positions at any profit and non-profit sport, fitness and leisure organization. This program expands and deepens professional knowledge of strategic aspects of sport management such as finance, marketing, event and facility management. The program also explores the world’s most systematic and progressive ways to develop sporting organizations and services with a focus on lifelong nurturing of participants for better performance, health, education, and social harmony.
