BORN Approval Status FAQ's
The Board of Registration in Nursing has reviewed the university’s Bachelor’s in Nursing program and has asked the School of Nursing to accomplish a series of tasks, which the School of Nursing has already begun the work of addressing including:
- Revising the systematic evaluation plan (SEP) into two separate SEP plans to include one SEP for BORN regulations and another SEP for Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (“CCNE”) accreditation standard. The School of Nursing is currently reviewing the expected level of achievement and providing evidence of data we need to identify for each SEP.
- Conducting an ongoing revision and publication of the 14 BORN program policies.
The School of Nursing has already completed an evaluation of its maintenance of records policy regarding tracking preceptor qualifications and clinical contract language requirements.

So, the “Approved with Warning” status will continue through at least September 2025.
Although Salem State University pre-licensure programs remain approved through BORN, that approval is now qualified as “approval with warning.” The School of Nursing is confident that this change in status will be temporary as we adjust administrative practices, documentation, program oversight, and the systematic evaluation plans to address the noted issues.
