The Master of Arts/Master of Arts in Teaching English offers students a balanced program of reflection and research in principles and practices for instruction of English language and literature with particular emphasis upon contemporary methodology. It builds additional competence in the subject area of English. Successful completion of the program leads to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts academic requirements for licensure to teach English at the secondary level. It also prepares students for advanced studies in literature at the doctoral level.

If you already hold an undergraduate degree in English and want to pursue a career teaching English in grades 5-12, consider the MAT English.
 

  • MA/MAT English: a dual-degree program for students who do not have an undergraduate degree in English and are seeking initial licensure to teach English at the middle and secondary levels in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

  • MA English: for those seeking to advance their training, pursue a career in writing/editing/communications, prepare for doctoral study, or advance to professional licensure or beyond in their secondary teaching career. 

  • MAT English: for those with an undergraduate degree in English and are seeking initial licensure to teach English at the middle and secondary levels in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
