Writing Programs from the Writing Center
The Mary G. Walsh Writing Center houses several programs at the institution that support students, faculty, and staff:
-
The Writing Intensive Curriculum Program works to support faculty in the teaching of writing in the vertical model of writing and in courses across the curriculum. It holds faculty professional development workshops and seminars and offers individual or departmental custom-designed workshops or presentations. Teachers can also browse a plethora of teaching resources that they can adopt or adapt for their courses.

The Peer Tutoring Program offers one-to-one face-to-face, synchronous, or asynchronous consultations for students with an experienced undergraduate writing center tutor. Peer tutors are trained in a 3 credit writing tutor practicum course.

The Course Embedded Tutor Program pairs a faculty member teaching a writing intensive (W-I, W-II, W-III) course with an experienced undergraduate or graduate writing center tutor. Changing Lives Through Literature (CLTL) convenes at the Mary G. Walsh Writing Center on campus, where participants explore contemporary issues through reading and writing. Founded by Dr. Robert Waxler at the University of Dartmouth to reduce probation time, CLTL now offers profound personal insights. Through discussions and reflections, participants gain understanding of human experiences and the power of choice. CLTL fosters self-awareness and societal empathy among participants, impacting not just probationers but also their officers and judges.

Salem State University (SSU) and Nanjing Normal University (NNU) have a partnership where 20 NNU students spend a year in China, then two years at SSU. After their final year at NNU, they receive degrees from both universities. During their second year at SSU, they enroll in the Writing Center Practicum to become tutors. They then return to NNU to tutor new students using Mandarin to assist with English writing tasks.

The SSU/SHS Early College Writing and Tutoring Center grew out of a revolutionary partnership between a member of Salem High School’s Writing Program and Salme State University's Writing Center. The partnership was forged within the context of the University’s Early College Program, which allows high school juniors and seniors to take up to four university courses, including the University’s Writing Center Practicum in which they learn tutoring theory and practice. One result of this collaborative enterprise has been a transition at the high school from offering little to no tutoring support for writing, to depending exclusively for such support on university undergraduate tutors, to developing its own high school peer tutors prepared by the University’s Writing Center Practicum.
